International Day For The Conservation Of The Mangrove Ecosystem

International Day For The Conservation Of The Mangrove Ecosystem

The International Day for the Conservation of the Mangrove Ecosystem is observed on July 26th every year to raise awareness about the importance of mangrove ecosystems and to promote their conservation and sustainable use. This day was declared by the General Conference of UNESCO in 2015, in recognition of the vital role that mangroves play in sustaining coastal biodiversity and supporting the livelihoods of millions of people around the world.

Mangroves are unique and highly productive ecosystems that grow in the intertidal zones of tropical and subtropical regions. They are important breeding and nursery grounds for fish and other aquatic species and also provide valuable ecosystem services such as carbon sequestration, erosion control, and protection against storm surges and tsunamis.

Despite their importance, mangroves are under threat from a range of human activities, including deforestation, coastal development, and pollution. The loss of mangroves has serious consequences for both the environment and local communities, including increased vulnerability to climate change, loss of biodiversity, and economic hardship for those who depend on mangrove resources for their livelihoods.

To mark the International Day for the Conservation of the Mangrove Ecosystem, various activities are organized by NGOs, local communities, and government agencies to raise awareness about the importance of mangroves and to promote conservation and sustainable use practices. These activities include tree-planting campaigns, educational programs, public lectures, and awareness-raising events.
