Loomis Day

Loomis Day

Loomis Day is an annual observance that takes place on May 30th each year, in honour of the American astronomer, painter, and engraver, Mahlon Loomis.

Mahlon Loomis was born on October 21, 1826, and is known for his pioneering work in wireless communication. In 1866, he successfully transmitted telegraphic signals between two points over a distance of several miles using the Earth’s atmosphere as a conductor. This achievement is considered by some to be a precursor to modern radio technology.

Loomis Day was established in honour of Mahlon Loomis’s contributions to science and technology. It is also a celebration of innovation and creativity, and a reminder of the importance of pushing the boundaries of knowledge and exploration.

On Loomis Day, people may celebrate by exploring new ideas and technologies, attending science or technology-related events, or simply reflecting on the importance of innovation and creativity in our lives. The day may also be used to highlight the achievements of other pioneers and innovators in science and technology.
