National Graham Cracker Day

National Graham Cracker Day

National Graham Cracker Day is a food holiday celebrated on July 5th in the United States. The holiday honours the invention of the graham cracker by Reverend Sylvester Graham in the early 19th century.

Reverend Sylvester Graham, a Presbyterian minister and dietary reformer, invented graham crackers in the 1820s as part of his efforts to promote a healthy diet. He believed that a diet high in whole grains and low in meat and refined flour would lead to better health and longer life. Graham crackers were made from whole wheat flour, bran, and wheat germ, and were originally called “Graham bread.”

Today, graham crackers are a popular snack food in the United States, often enjoyed with peanut butter or marshmallows as part of the classic campfire treat, s’mores. They are also used as a base for many dessert recipes, such as cheesecake crusts and pie crusts.

On National Graham Cracker Day, people celebrate by enjoying graham crackers in various ways, whether plain, topped with toppings like chocolate or peanut butter, or used as a key ingredient in their favourite desserts.
