World Sickle Cell Day

World Sickle Cell Day

World Sickle Cell Day is observed annually on June 19th to raise awareness about sickle cell disease (SCD) and to support those who are affected by it. This day was established by the United Nations General Assembly in 2008.

Sickle cell disease is an inherited blood disorder that affects the red blood cells, causing them to become stiff, sticky, and crescent-shaped. These abnormal cells can block blood flow in the blood vessels, leading to severe pain, organ damage, and a range of other complications.

World Sickle Cell Day aims to promote a greater understanding of sickle cell disease and to encourage governments, healthcare professionals, and communities to take action to improve the lives of those living with this condition. It also provides an opportunity to celebrate the strength and resilience of people living with sickle cell disease, as well as their families and caregivers.

On this day, various events and activities are organized around the world, including educational seminars, blood drives, fundraisers, and community gatherings. People are encouraged to wear red, the official colour of sickle cell disease, as a symbol of solidarity with those affected by the condition.

Through increased awareness and education, World Sickle Cell Day hopes to help improve the lives of those living with sickle cell disease and to promote greater research and investment in finding a cure for this condition.
