World Telecommunication and Information Society Day (WTISD) is an annual event celebrated on May 17th to raise awareness about the importance of communication and information technologies (ICTs) in our society. The day was first celebrated in 1969 when the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) established it as an opportunity to mark the founding of the ITU and to focus on the importance of communication and information technologies in our daily lives.
The ITU is a specialized agency of the United Nations that is responsible for coordinating global telecommunication networks and services. The organization is dedicated to ensuring that all people have access to affordable and reliable communication technologies, regardless of where they live or their socioeconomic status.
WTISD is celebrated by a range of organizations, including government agencies, non-profits, and private companies. Activities may include seminars, workshops, public lectures, exhibitions, and other events that promote awareness of the role that ICTs play in our society. The goal of WTISD is to increase awareness of the important role that communication and information technologies play in our daily lives and to promote the development of ICTs to benefit all people, regardless of their location or economic status.
